Second Annual UIL Fantasy League

Postby stupidityismygam » Mon Mar 23, 2009 9:17 am

Districts are just beginning, so now is a good time to work out all of the details of the Second Annual UIL Fantasy League so that it can be improved upon from last year. Sign-ups will start sometime in the future but right now we will just work out the rules. Here are the rules from the original fantasy league...

A few days before region, you will select who you will be using. You get one guy for number sense, one guy for math, one guy for calculator, one guy for Science, and one utility guy (this means that all 4 subjects are added for him). The sixth is pretty much a sub, in case someone doesn't make it to state (You can sub him in even if everyone makes it to state).
Each person will be scaled to 100, but the utility guy will be scaled to 150. This means that you are playing for 550 points at each contest, for 1100 total. (Science will be multiplied by 5/18, Number sense by 1/4, math by 5/18, calculator by 2/7, utility by 5/49)

Names in the spreadsheet that are italicizes means the player is in 4a, in case you need this to analyze.

A draft order will be randomly decided, and the draft will probably work like this: you submit a list of the players ranked as you want them. When your turn comes in a round, you will get the player at the top of your list who has not already been taken. If we all have google accounts, we will probably do this draft real time.

A couple things that I noticed from last year were:
Utility broke the system. Probably scaling utility down would be proper.
No computer science.

Any suggestions?

I'm in. (here is the game last year)
I thought the google spreadsheet worked really well last year. We should try doing that this year. This means that everyone needs either a gmail account or just a google account, and we will do drafting in real time. First person to pick round one will be last to pick round 2, first to pick round 3, etc. Having 7 people on each team also worked well.

Utility will probably be scaled just to 100. Not doing computer science worked fairly well; score computation was reasonably complicated as it was.

A few tips to picking that kinda messed some people's teams last year:
-Consider the region a person is in. Just because he has a "good" total score (for utility) doesn't mean he'll make state in each subject.
-To be continued.

There aren't enough people who are 4 deep to make the utility be fair. Essentially, whoever gets lucky enough to have the 1st and 2nd pick will have a clear-cut advantage because their utilities will be 4 deep, while the other 6 owners will get shafted with someone who is only 3 deep. Mark and Kevin really break the utility system.

You can draft any Aer but the draft list will primarily consist of 5Aers with a few 4Aers. The compilers of the draft sheet will include any requests though.

Okay interest is off the chain, so if I can get to 14 people we will cut the groups in half and have a league that is mostly like the league last year and a league that has some "new" rules (such as including comp sci and anything else cool and interesting)

We should also have rookie teams that count for a little, made up of 3 sophmores and freshman with at least one freshman.

Hm...I'm in. About any Aers...I think you shouldn't be able to grab from any classification the pool will be too large, and people can pull anyone...idk. I say stick with 4-5 Aers. Anyone else can put their opinion on this also.

Also, the utility position needs to be fixed probably. Like stated above, there's a limited amount of 4 deep people.

Unfortunately there are not enough rookies that make it to state to make this worthwhile...we would need about 24 of them...and Kevin Chen would completely break that system...

People who were in the league last year have priority in the placement in the "main" league. The draft doesn't start until after District (since that is when we first get the scores for all the teams). I'm still taking ideas on how to make this work out, especially with the "new" league that we may need.

The pool that I will be making will be 5Aers with notable 4Aers and 3Aers. However, if you do your own research you can draft anyone you want to, I am just not willing to compile a huge list. So if you want to draft 2Aers or 1Aers or anybody that I won't have on the list feel free, but you will have to do extra work.

The utility will definitely be less of an impact, but I am still deciding on the details. I know that Kevin, Mark, Akash and I will be 4 deep, but I am not confident that I will make it out of districts in science (since only the top 4 of the winning team advances). There are many very good 3 deepers such as Alex Ryan which should help things out as well. It all works out I think based on the drafting system since the person with the top utility will not have the top math, number sense, calculator, or science individual scorers which will have a bigger impact in this year's league. Now instead of the first round being focused on drafting utilities it will kind of be a potpourri of picks, since everything will be an equal weight (under the current plans). Still, the plans are still in their infant stage and are quite suspect to change so don't hold me to this.

You can't have a tournament without last year's winner...perhaps I should choose last?
Or perhaps I should be a "judge" and pseudo-randomly assign picks for each round?

I say you should join in. You should also get something for being last year's winner, pick first? How up to date are you with this year's scorers?

Certainly not a first pick...wasn't that how I won last year? As to part 2, Not at all. I've been busy with the Putnam competition.

Busy with putnam? That ended in December! Are you getting that big of a jump on next year? Oh yeah, don't scores come out soon because I am interested to see if I got >0.

i think any aers should be allowed as 3a 3a is as competitive and strong if not more than 4a, and i think 11a and 2a have a good kid or 2. also, i think a rookie system without kyc. sorry for the bad mistakes, im on a cell phone and i can see only part of the screen.
