Texas Competitive Mathematics
I started competing in math contests when I was in Middle School. In 1986 I was in 7th grade, on my school's Number Sense team, and one one of the first MathCounts to compete at the state level. I switched schools in 8th grade and my new school didn't have math team. Neither did the high school until I transfered high schools in 11th grade, making top ten in Number Sense in both 11th and 12th grade at TMSCA State and helping out school win its first District Championship team in a decade.
As I was getting my master's degree at Texas Tech University, I first became aware of HTML and the power of web pages. It was 1995 the world was switching over to AOL and other internet services.
I then started teaching at Lubbock High in 1997 and started working with the math team there. I thought it would be a good idea to have a clearinghouse across the state where upcoming meets, results, and even articles and downloadable practice tests could be available.
Texas Competitive Matheamtics was born.
As technology became available, what was offered on TCM grew. We added an online forum where students could talk with other students about test taking strategies or anything else that was on their minds. Practice worksheets were offered up so people could increase their skills. And we suppoted the community who were selling practice tests, video sets, and other items of interest to competitors and coaches alike.
Sadly, a computer fire in 2013 caused most of the files I had to go away. The only backups I had were sadly out of date. My teaching role was changed from UIL Academic Coordinator to AP Coordinator, which severely cut back on my coaching time and free time to work on the site. And, eventually, I left teaching due to back and knee problems.
Now, I'm putting up what I have left both as a memory of coaches and competitors gone by as well as a historical record that may be helpful or ineresting to coaches and students.
